What more does your dog love than roaming through the luscious grass and enjoying the fresh air in the great outdoors. There are many beautiful walks, trails and forests for you to enjoy together. 

Portlick Millennium Forest 

Walk along the peninsula of Lough Ree in Portlick Millennium Forest. There are three trails with different levels of difficulty and all trails are dog friendly. Walk through the woods and farmland of the Whinning Peninsula and the old ruins from ancient times. 

Shannon Banks Nature Trail and Athlone Canal 

Beginning at the back of Athlone Castle, this 5 kilometer loop walk guides you along the banks of the River Shannon and the Athlone Canal, taking you on a nature trail. See the flora and fauna, wildlife and fish that live within the hidden heartlands. 

Burgess Park Athlone 

Located near Athlone town, this short loop walk around the River Shannon is the perfect place for a short walk to stretch the legs. Burgess park also has a memorial garden. Dogs must be on a lead when visiting the park. 

Mullingar Dog Park 

Westmeath also has its first ever Dog Park, which opened in 2022. Located between the Royal Canal and the Old Rail Trail Greenways, the enclosed three acre dog park offers a safe and friendly space for your dog to exercise. This is the perfect place for them to enjoy the freedom of being leash free.

Athlone Guided Tour 

The fun doesn’t stop there! Why not take a tour of Athlone towncentre and learn about the history, folklore, famous residents, and landmarks around Athlone town with your doggo!  From the oldest pub in Ireland, Sean’s Bar to Athlone Castle to Custume Barracks. There are lots to see on the Athlone Guided Tours.

Viking Tours 

The Viking Tours, which offers options of two sailing routes along the River Shannon to Lough Ree and Clonmacnoise. Allow you and your dog to explore the history, flora, birdlife and marine life on the boat trip. 

Athlone Marina 

Located in the heart of Athlone town, between the town bridge and the railway bridge along the River Shannon. Enjoy looking at the magnificent ships while on a leisurely walk along the Marina   

While you are in Athlone towncentre, make sure to visit some of the dog friendly cafés that Athlone has to offer. Poppy Fields Café and Fine Athlone are just some to mention. 

Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park

Head over to Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park in Moate which takes you back in time. Visitors can discover the culture and history of living in a rural community area. As a dog owner you should note that dogs are only allowed into the Amenity Gardens
